If packet loss appears on WiFi but disappears when the same device uses Ethernet, start with the wireless link between that device and the router. Run the same test on both connections, ping the router as well as an internet address, and compare another WiFi device. That will tell you whether to work on signal, interference, one wireless adapter, or the router instead of changing unrelated internet settings.
Do not buy a faster internet plan yet. Ethernet working normally is useful evidence, but one quick test is not enough. Repeat the comparison under the same conditions and fix the first part of the path that shows loss.

What the Ethernet comparison tells you
WiFi and Ethernet share most of the path to a website or game server. The difference is the first hop: radio for WiFi and a cable for Ethernet. If the wired test stays clean while WiFi repeatedly loses packets, the problem is usually somewhere on that wireless hop.

This is a narrower problem than simply having high ping. If those terms are getting mixed together, read our packet loss, ping, and jitter comparison before changing the network.
1. Run a fair WiFi and Ethernet test
Use the same computer, destination, room, and time of day. A phone on WiFi and a PC on Ethernet do not make a clean comparison because the two devices have different radios, drivers, and background activity.
- Pause downloads, cloud backups, game updates, and video streams on the test device.
- Connect by WiFi and run the test.
- Turn WiFi off, connect Ethernet to the same router, and repeat the test.
- Run each comparison more than once, especially when the problem comes and goes.
On Windows, open Command Prompt and enter ipconfig. Find the Default Gateway for the active connection. It is often an address such as 192.168.1.1, but use the address shown on your PC.

Then test an internet destination:

2. Interpret the two destinations
Loss to the gateway over WiFi is the clearest sign of a local wireless problem. The packets have not reached the modem or internet provider yet. Changing DNS, buying more download speed, or forwarding ports will not repair that first radio hop.
If the gateway test is clean but the internet test loses packets on both WiFi and Ethernet, move your attention beyond WiFi. Restart the network equipment, check whether other services fail, and look for a provider outage. If only one game reports loss while general tests remain clean, check the game’s server status and test a different game region before editing router settings.
3. Find out whether one device or all WiFi devices are affected
Run the gateway ping from a second laptop or phone in the same place. If the second device is stable, work on the original device. If both lose packets, look at placement, interference, the selected band, and the router.
When only one device fails, forget the saved WiFi network and reconnect. On Windows 11, open Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi > Manage known networks, select the network, and choose Forget. 4. Test next to the router, then return to the problem room
Move the device into the same room as the router and repeat the gateway ping. Keep the router in the open, not inside a cabinet or behind a television. If the nearby test is clean and the original room is not, distance, walls, furniture, or local interference is part of the problem.
Do not judge only by the WiFi icon. A device can remain connected while retransmissions and interference make real-time traffic unreliable. Compare the packet result and the behavior of the call, stream, or game that exposed the issue.

5. Compare the available WiFi bands
If your router shows separate network names for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, test both. Microsoft recommends trying another frequency band when diagnosing Windows WiFi trouble. The closer 5 GHz connection may be cleaner and faster, while 2.4 GHz usually reaches farther through a home.
Some routers use one network name and steer devices automatically. Google’s explanation of 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz band selection notes that the client device still chooses a single band at a time based on factors such as compatibility, signal strength, and distance. A laptop can therefore make a different choice from the phone beside it.

6. Remove congestion from the test
Packet loss can appear while the home connection is busy even when a speed test looks impressive. Pause large uploads, cloud sync, console downloads, security camera backups, and high-resolution streams for one comparison. Intel lists background downloads and busy household traffic among the conditions worth checking.
If the loss disappears only when other traffic stops, confirm which device is using the connection. Router traffic statistics may help. Quality of Service can improve some busy networks, but its menus and behavior differ by router. Change one setting at a time and repeat the same test. Do not assume that turning every “gaming” option on will help.
7. Check the Windows WiFi adapter
Install Windows updates, then check the PC manufacturer’s support page for the current wireless driver for your exact model. Avoid random driver download sites. If the problem began after a driver change, use Device Manager to inspect the driver history and the rollback option rather than repeatedly uninstalling software.
Windows can also turn a wireless adapter off to save power. In Device Manager, open Network adapters, select the WiFi adapter, open Properties, and check the Power Management tab. Microsoft’s guide recommends clearing Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power when diagnosing frequent WiFi trouble.
8. Generate a Windows wireless network report
Intermittent loss is hard to catch while staring at a ping window. Windows can build an HTML report of recent WiFi events:

Microsoft’s wireless network report guide says the report covers WiFi events from the previous three days. It includes connection sessions, failures, disconnect reasons, adapter details, driver information, and detected networks.
Look for repeated disconnect reasons, red error markers, a problem number for the adapter, and failures at the times the game or call broke up. The report contains system and network details, so review it before sharing the file publicly.
9. Restart and update the router before replacing it
Restart the router with its normal power control or by unplugging it briefly. Do not press the recessed factory-reset button. A factory reset erases the network name, password, and other settings.
Check the router maker’s support page for firmware instructions for the exact model. If the router offers automatic channel selection, leave it enabled for the first retest. A manual channel can help in a crowded area, but copying a channel number from a generic article ignores the networks around your home.
When to replace hardware or call the provider
- Consider the device adapter when one laptop loses packets on every band and other WiFi devices remain stable in the same place.
- Consider the router when every WiFi device loses packets close to it, Ethernet stays clean, and firmware plus placement checks do not help.
- Consider coverage equipment when the connection is clean beside the router but repeatedly fails in one distant part of the home.
- Contact the internet provider when both WiFi and Ethernet show the same loss beyond the router, especially if the modem reports a connection fault or nearby customers report an outage.
Keep the paired test results, times, and affected devices. “WiFi lost packets to the gateway while Ethernet stayed clean” gives support staff far more useful information than “the internet feels laggy.”
Common questions
Does Ethernet guarantee zero packet loss?
No. Ethernet removes the WiFi radio hop, but loss can still come from a cable, port, router, modem, provider, or remote server. Its value here is diagnostic: a clean wired result helps isolate the wireless part of the path.
Should I change DNS to fix WiFi packet loss?
Not when the gateway ping already shows loss. DNS helps a device find an address by name. It does not repair packets lost between the device and router. Change DNS only when tests point to name resolution rather than the wireless link.
Which band is best for gaming?
Use the band that produces the most stable result in the actual room. A nearby 5 GHz or 6 GHz connection may work well, while 2.4 GHz can hold a connection farther away. The device, router, walls, and nearby networks all affect the answer.
How long should I test?
Fifty pings are a practical first comparison. If the problem happens only in the evening or during a game, repeat the test when the fault is active. A clean two-minute test at noon cannot rule out an intermittent problem at night.
