Circle to Search Not Working? Samsung & Pixel Fixes

Table of Contents

If Circle to Search is not working, first try it on an ordinary web page. A shortcut that never opens needs different checks from a search panel that opens but cannot load results. Do not start by resetting your phone: the cause may be a disabled setting, an unsupported device or an app that intentionally blocks screen capture.

This guide uses Google and Samsung’s current documentation checked on October 22, 2026. The Samsung menu paths apply to compatible Galaxy devices; Pixel and other Android phones can use different labels. These are suggested checks, not results from a phone we tested.

Start with what happens when you hold the shortcut

Open a normal public web page with a clear image, rather than a banking app or private document. Google’s Circle to Search instructions say to touch and hold the Home button or the navigation handle at the bottom of the screen. Wait for the search overlay, then tap or circle the item. Drawing a circle before activating the overlay does not follow that sequence.

What you seeCheck next
Nothing happens, or a different assistant opensThe activation gesture, feature switch and device support
A message says screen search is unavailable because of settingsThe default digital assistant and screen-data permission
It works in the browser but not one particular appThat app’s screen-capture restrictions
The overlay opens, but results do not loadThe internet connection and Google app update

Use the same harmless page for each retest. Changing the app, network and settings together makes it harder to tell which change helped. Write down the exact message instead of treating every failure as “AI is broken.”

If the shortcut does nothing, check the feature switch

On a compatible Galaxy phone, Samsung’s Circle to Search setup guide gives this path: Settings > Display > Navigation bar > Circle to Search. Check whether the switch is on. Search Settings for the feature if your software uses a different layout.

On other supported Android phones, search Settings for “Circle to Search” rather than assuming the Galaxy path applies. Check the exact model’s support information. A recent Android version alone does not establish compatibility.

Also check what you are holding. A side-button shortcut that launches a voice assistant is not the same action as holding the bottom Home button or navigation handle. You do not need to replace your normal navigation style just because a generic troubleshooting video uses a different one.

Fix the “Screen search isn’t available” settings message

Google’s troubleshooting instructions point to Settings > Apps > Default apps > Digital assistant app. Check that Google is the default digital assistant and that Use screen and app data is enabled if you want screen search to analyze that content.

Samsung calls the relevant option Analyze on-screen images under Apps > Choose default apps > Digital assistant app. Read the permission explanation before changing it. You can decline screen analysis and type a search instead.

This is a specific permission check, not a reason to enable every permission on the phone. Do not turn on unrelated accessibility services, install an unofficial helper or upload a private screenshot to a stranger’s repair page. After a change, return to the same public test page and try once more.

If only one app fails, respect its capture restrictions

Google warns that Circle to Search may not work in banking, medical and other confidential apps. Samsung also identifies apps that prohibit screen capture for security or copyright reasons. If the same gesture works on your ordinary browser page, that is evidence against a phone-wide shortcut failure.

Do not try to defeat the restriction. For a product name or unfamiliar phrase, type the non-sensitive words into Search yourself. Keep account numbers, medical details and private messages out of the query. A protected screen is not a good test image for troubleshooting.

On a folding phone, note which display you used and whether the problem started after folding or unfolding. Samsung’s One UI troubleshooting guide documents older Z Fold5 display-transition problems. That is not proof that every current foldable has the same bug. Reproduce the issue on one display without changing screens and record the software version for support.

If results will not load, separate the network from the app

Circle to Search needs internet access, according to Samsung. A saved picture on the phone does not make the search offline. If that distinction is causing confusion, our Galaxy AI offline guide separates local translation from connected search.

  1. On the current connection, open a new public page and make an ordinary typed Google search. Do not rely on a page that was already loaded.
  2. If browsing also fails, handle that connection problem first. Repeatedly changing Circle to Search permissions will not establish internet access.
  3. If you have mobile data available and understand any charges, compare with WiFi turned off. A difference between networks narrows the problem; it does not prove which router setting or carrier policy caused it.
  4. If ordinary browsing and Search work, update the Google app through the Play Store, restart at a convenient time and retest the same image.

Samsung’s troubleshooting guide recommends a restart and Google app update for an unresponsive Circle to Search. Google also calls for the latest Google app. Updating Gemini alone is not the same step. If the actual failure is a Gemini voice conversation, use our separate Gemini Live troubleshooting guide.

Account restrictions and missing extras need different checks

If you see an age or eligibility message, follow that message rather than assuming a network fault. Samsung’s account-restriction notice describes restrictions for under-13 accounts and an official verification route for adults who receive the error. Rules can vary by country and change over time. Do not change a child’s birthday or evade supervision to make the tool appear.

If ordinary results appear but an extra button or result type is missing, record that narrower symptom. It is different from Circle to Search failing to open. Support will need to know the exact feature you expected, not just that you wanted “the AI part.”

After these checks, send official support your phone model, Android and manufacturer-software versions, Google app version, exact error and whether the browser test works on each connection. Crop out personal information from any evidence you share. Avoid a factory reset or a chain of data-clearing steps unless support identifies a reason and explains what you would lose.
