Gemini Live Not Working? Fix Voice, Camera & Sound

Table of Contents

If Gemini Live is not working, first identify what fails: the Live button is missing, Gemini cannot hear you, you cannot hear its reply, or camera sharing stops. Open the Gemini mobile app with your phone unlocked and try a brief voice-only conversation. Leave camera and screen sharing off until voice works.

That small check helps separate access, microphone, audio and connection problems. It is more useful than changing several settings at once. Do not start by buying a subscription, clearing all app data or resetting the phone; none of those identifies which part failed.

Match the symptom to the first check

Write down the exact message rather than calling every failure “not working.” A missing feature, a microphone warning and a stalled connection lead to different next steps. A working text reply also does not prove that Live’s microphone or playback is working.

If the Gemini Live button is missing

Use the Gemini mobile app, not a search result, an ordinary voice-input button or a browser shortcut. Google’s Android Live instructions direct users to the Live control or a left swipe. They also note gradual updates and currently exclude Gems. First check the main app conversation rather than a custom Gem.

Check which account is signed in. Google’s current Live guidance allows eligible personal accounts and work or school accounts with Gemini Apps access; it does not simply say that every work account is excluded. Its Live age requirement is over 13 or the applicable country age. Do not change a birth date or evade school or parental restrictions to make a feature appear.

Also review Gemini mobile app availability. Google says the app cannot be accessed in Android Work Profile and that Android Go is unsupported. General app access and a particular feature’s access are different checks. If an administrator controls the account or device, ask them about access instead of removing management controls.

On Android, distinguish failure to open Live from failure of “Hey Google.” Google’s Gemini mobile setup guide treats default-assistant and Voice Match settings separately from opening the app. If tapping Live works, investigate hands-free activation rather than reinstalling a working Live session.

If Gemini cannot hear you or you hear no sound

Return to the active Live screen and check whether it is muted or on Hold. Resume or unmute before speaking. Then say one short, non-sensitive sentence in a quiet room. Do not use a banking code, password or another person’s conversation as a microphone test.

On Android, open Settings > Apps, find the app named in the permission prompt, then open Permissions and check Microphone. Google’s Android app-permission instructions also describe device-wide Camera access and Microphone access controls. An app’s permission alone will not resolve a device-wide block. Menu names vary by phone; grant only the access needed for the feature you intend to use.

On iPhone, check Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone for Gemini. Apple’s microphone troubleshooting guide also suggests a Voice Memos recording and playback check. If normal recordings are unclear too, investigate the phone or connected microphone. If recordings work and only Gemini fails, that is a reason to focus on the app, not proof that the phone needs replacing.

For silent replies, raise the playback volume while the session should be speaking. Temporarily disconnect earbuds, a car system or another audio accessory and try the phone’s own speaker. Change only the output for this check, then reconnect afterward. If you hear a reply on the speaker, investigate the accessory connection before changing account settings.

If camera or screen sharing stops

Check the camera permission separately. On iPhone, Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera lists apps that have requested access, as described in Apple’s privacy-settings guidance. On Android, check the app permission and the device-wide camera control. Compare with an ordinary Camera-app preview without sharing anything private.

Google’s iPhone and iPad Live guide says leaving the app or locking the screen turns the camera off; it does not restart automatically on return. Screen sharing also needs restarting after Hold or a screen lock. Re-enable the intended sharing control rather than assuming the camera has failed.

Android background use and screen sharing require Live notifications. Check Google’s Android Live instructions if foreground voice works but background use fails. Muting is not a reliable way to stop visual sharing. Explicitly stop sharing or end the session before opening messages, account pages or private documents.

Compare connections before resetting anything

  1. Load a fresh web page to check basic internet access. Complete any legitimate hotel or public-WiFi sign-in first.
  2. In Gemini, try a short text prompt and then a voice-only Live session. Keep the same account and location.
  3. If your plan permits, compare with mobile data or another trusted WiFi connection. Avoid a long camera session while roaming.
  4. Note which combination fails. One failing network points toward its connection or access rules, but does not prove a particular router setting is responsible.
  5. Update Gemini through the official app store. On Android, also update the Google app, then restart the phone once and repeat the same small check.

If the phone is using another phone’s hotspot, check the host’s internet and tethering allowance. Our hotspot connected but no internet checklist separates the two devices. For the allowance used by voice or visual sessions, see our Gemini Live mobile-data guide; repeated speed tests are not needed for this comparison.

Do not disable a workplace’s security controls, delete management profiles or reset the home router because one app fails. If Live works on one connection but not another, take that result to the network owner. If the message explicitly names an access limit, follow that message and the account’s current terms instead of repeatedly clearing storage.

Keep a useful record if the problem continues

Record the phone model, system version, Gemini app version, account type, time and exact error. Include whether text works, whether voice works without accessories, and whether the failure follows one network. A report saying “voice works on mobile data, camera stops after locking” is much easier to act on than “Gemini is broken.”

If the failure persists across trusted connections after updates, use official in-app help or feedback and avoid changing more settings while waiting. That pattern can narrow the investigation, but it does not confirm a service-wide outage. Hide email addresses, personal chat content and notifications in screenshots; never post an account code or a recording of someone else without permission.
