If your Starlink Mini says Disconnected, start by checking the connection between your phone and the Mini, not the sky. In Starlink’s current help guidance, this message usually means the app cannot communicate directly with the Starlink router. Your Mini may have lost power, your phone may be on another WiFi network, or a VPN or third-party router may be blocking local access.
The steps below move from quick, low-risk checks to a factory reset. Stop as soon as the connection returns.
First, identify what is actually disconnected
These symptoms point to different problems. Check which one matches what you see before changing any settings.
| What you see | What it usually means | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| The app says Disconnected, but websites still load | Your phone is not talking directly to the Starlink router | Join the Starlink WiFi network, select the local Starlink in the app, and turn off any VPN temporarily |
| The Starlink WiFi name is missing | The Mini may not be powered, may still be starting, or may need a reboot | Check the device light, power source, and cable, then power cycle |
| Your phone joins Starlink WiFi, but there is no internet | The local WiFi works, but the Mini is not online | Open the app and check for an outage, obstruction, account, or status alert |
| The connection drops and returns repeatedly | Power, obstruction, weather, WiFi range, or a software restart may be involved | Check the app’s outage history, power connections, placement, and WiFi signal |
1. Connect your phone to the Starlink WiFi
Open your phone’s WiFi settings and confirm that it is connected to the network broadcast by your Starlink Mini. A phone can silently switch to cellular data, a saved home network, a hotel network, or a hotspot. In that case, the internet may still work while the Starlink app reports Disconnected.
- Turn off mobile data for a minute if you are unsure which connection the phone is using.
- Forget any nearby network that keeps reconnecting automatically.
- Rejoin your Starlink WiFi and reopen the Starlink app.
- If the app shows a cloud icon beside the network name, tap the name and select the local Starlink connection.
If only one phone cannot stay connected while other devices work, use the device-specific checks in our guide to fix WiFi that is not working on one device.
2. Turn off a VPN and check third-party router settings
A VPN can prevent the app from reaching the Mini on your local network. Pause the VPN, reopen the Starlink app, and check the status again. You can turn the VPN back on after troubleshooting.
A separate travel router, mesh system, firewall, or guest network can cause the same symptom. Connect the phone directly to the Mini’s own WiFi for this test. If that works, the Starlink service is probably fine and the problem is in the added network equipment.
For a third-party router connected to the Mini’s Ethernet port, make sure you know whether the Mini is in bypass mode. Avoid stacking two routers unless you need that layout. If both are routing, our double NAT troubleshooting guide explains how to confirm the setup and choose a cleaner configuration.
3. Read the light on the back of the Mini
The light gives you a useful power check before you reset anything. Starlink’s Mini setup guidance describes the current light behavior this way:
- Slow blinking: the Mini has power.
- No light: the Mini is not receiving power.
- Fast blinking for about three seconds: the reset button is being held and the Mini is about to reboot.
If there is no light, reseat the power connection and try a known-working power source that meets the requirements for your Mini kit and cable. Do not assume a USB-C charger, power bank, vehicle socket, or extension cable is suitable just because the plug fits. Mobile setups are especially sensitive to loose adapters and power sources that shut down under load.
If the app later shows a power disconnect alert, Starlink recommends checking the power source and every connection to the power supply and Mini. Do that before changing WiFi settings.
4. Power cycle the Starlink Mini
A normal reboot is safer than a factory reset because it keeps your WiFi name and password.
- Disconnect the Mini from power.
- Wait at least 10 seconds.
- Reconnect the power cable firmly.
- Give the Mini time to start, then reconnect your phone to its WiFi.
- Open the Starlink app and check for a specific status or alert.
Do not repeatedly unplug the Mini while it is starting. A software update or normal boot can take time. If the app specifically says Searching, Starlink advises power cycling and waiting at least 30 minutes because the dish may be installing an update.
5. Inspect the power cable and connectors
Turn off and unplug the Mini before touching its connectors. Check the power cable from end to end and look for a loose plug, a sharp bend, crushed insulation, exposed wire, moisture, or debris. Reconnect each plug fully without forcing it.
If you use the Ethernet port, inspect that connection too. Starlink notes that its Mini cable is designed to protect the dish from water ingress. A third-party RJ45 cable can reduce the Mini’s water protection, so an outdoor cable connection deserves special attention after rain or relocation.
Do not rely on a single debug number or a guessed cable-loss threshold to condemn the hardware. Current support guidance focuses on visible damage, secure connections, app alerts, and repeatable symptoms. If the Mini keeps losing power with a known-good supported source, document the pattern for Starlink Support.
6. If WiFi works but internet does not, check app alerts
Once your phone can join the Starlink WiFi and the app can see the Mini, the word Disconnected should no longer be the main clue. Read the new status shown in the app.
- Service outage: wait for Starlink to restore service in your area.
- Searching: confirm the service location and allow time for a restart or update.
- Obstructed: use the app’s obstruction tool and move the Mini to a clearer view of the sky.
- Account or data alert: confirm that the correct kit has an active plan and that billing is current.
- Recent interruptions: check the outage history for a pattern involving weather, obstructions, or repeated power loss.
If the internet drops on WiFi but a wired connection remains stable, troubleshoot the local wireless link instead of the satellite service. Our guide to packet loss on WiFi but not Ethernet helps separate weak signal and interference from an upstream connection problem.
7. Check placement, obstructions, and WiFi range
The Mini needs both a clear view of the sky and a useful WiFi path to your devices. Those are separate requirements.
Use the Starlink app’s Check for Obstructions tool for the satellite path. Trees, buildings, poles, roof edges, and new campsite placement can cause interruptions. Check the app’s outage history instead of judging the sky by eye.
For the local WiFi path, place the Mini as centrally as practical and reduce metal, concrete, brick, and other dense barriers between it and your devices. Starlink says the integrated Mini router is intended for compact areas. In a larger home, a hardwired router or compatible mesh system may provide more consistent coverage.
If the entire WiFi network disconnects every few minutes, compare your symptoms with our broader guide to a WiFi connection that keeps dropping. That checklist helps identify device, router, interference, and internet-side causes without mixing them together.
8. Factory reset only after the earlier checks
A factory reset erases the Mini’s WiFi name and password, so save it for last. The current Starlink Mini procedure is shorter than some older instructions found online:
- Locate the reset icon on the back of the Mini.
- Press firmly until you feel or hear the button click.
- Hold it for three seconds. The light should blink quickly and then turn off as the Mini reboots.
- On your phone, look for the default STARLINK WiFi network.
- Join it and complete setup in the Starlink app, including a new WiFi name and password.
Do not use a 15-second or 20-second hold unless the instructions for your exact hardware say to do so. Starlink’s current Mini setup guide specifies three seconds.
When to contact Starlink Support
Open a support ticket if the Mini has no light with a known-working supported power source, the default STARLINK network never appears after a reset, the app reports a hardware-related alert, or the connection still fails after the steps above.
Include the kit name, the exact app status, when the problem started, whether it is constant or intermittent, the power source and cable you used, and clear photos of the installation and connections. If the problem comes and goes, include screenshots of the app’s outage history. A ticket sent from the Starlink app can include device details that help support staff diagnose the issue.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the Starlink app say Disconnected when the internet still works?
Your phone may be using cellular data, another WiFi network, a VPN, or a third-party router that prevents local communication with the Mini. Connect directly to the Mini’s WiFi, pause the VPN, and choose the local Starlink connection in the app.
How do I reconnect my phone to a Starlink Mini?
Open the phone’s WiFi settings and join the network created by the Mini. If the Mini was factory reset, look for the default STARLINK network, join it, and finish setup in the Starlink app.
Does Disconnected mean the Starlink dish is broken?
No. The message can simply mean that the app cannot reach the Starlink router. Check the phone’s WiFi connection, VPN, power, and third-party networking equipment before assuming there is a hardware failure.
How long should I hold the Starlink Mini reset button?
Starlink’s current Mini instructions say to hold the button for three seconds, until the light blinks quickly and turns off. The Mini then reboots and returns to its default WiFi setup.
