If your PS5 keeps disconnecting from WiFi, do not start by changing random DNS numbers or forwarding ports. First compare the console with another device, then test the PS5 near the router, lock one WiFi band, and check the console’s connection status. These steps separate a weak wireless path from a router, NAT, PlayStation Network, or console problem.

1. Check PlayStation Network status and run the console test
On the PS5, open Settings, Network, and Connection Status, then choose Test Internet Connection. Note whether the console obtains an IP address, reaches the internet, and reports a NAT type. A temporary PlayStation Network outage can look like a home WiFi problem, so check the official PlayStation status page before changing your router.
Write down the time of the failure and the test result. A speed number alone does not explain a disconnect. A failure to obtain an IP address points toward the local network, while a successful local connection with a game-only error points further along the path.
2. Test the PS5 beside the router
Move the console temporarily to an open location close to the router. Keep it away from a cabinet, metal surface, large speaker, or other device that can block or disturb the signal. PlayStation’s connection guidance also recommends bringing a wireless console closer to the router and removing interruptions when investigating connection errors.
If the nearby test is stable, the internet plan is probably not the first thing to replace. Improve the path to the usual TV location with a better access-point position, Ethernet, or a wired backhaul. If it still disconnects beside the router while other devices remain stable, continue with the console and router checks.
3. Try one WiFi band at a time
When a router uses one name for both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, the PS5 may move between bands as signal conditions change. For one controlled test, give the bands separate names or temporarily connect the console to one band only. Use 5 GHz when the console is close enough for a strong signal; use 2.4 GHz when distance and walls make range more important.
Do not change several wireless settings at once. Keep a short note of the band, location, and time so you can tell whether the connection changed because of the setting or because the household was quieter.
4. Forget the network and reconnect carefully
On the PS5, remove the saved WiFi connection and add it again using the exact network name and password. This clears a stale profile without resetting every router setting. Restart the PS5 after reconnecting, then run the built-in connection test before opening a game.
If the router recently changed its security mode, guest-network rules, or WiFi password, confirm that the console is joining the intended main network. A similarly named guest network may have isolation rules that affect multiplayer connections.
5. Compare Ethernet before changing DNS or MTU
Connect the PS5 to the router with a known-good Ethernet cable for one session. If wired play is stable while WiFi drops, focus on wireless placement, interference, or the access point. If wired and wireless fail in the same way, look at the router, ISP, service status, or console software instead.
Leave DNS and MTU on automatic while you isolate the link. PlayStation notes that an MTU error can cause delays or failures when packets are larger than a path can handle. Manual values are not a universal fix, and changing them can make the original symptom harder to reproduce.
6. Check NAT and router layout
NAT describes how the console reaches other networks. A restrictive NAT can affect party chat, matchmaking, or Remote Play even when ordinary browsing works. If the PS5 reports a strict type, check whether the home has two routers, a modem-router plus a second router, or a provider gateway behind your own router. That layout can create double NAT.
Use the router’s UPnP setting only according to its documentation and your household’s security policy. Avoid copying port-forwarding lists from an unrelated game or forum. If a work, school, or managed network is involved, ask its administrator before changing the gateway.
7. Update software and check heat and airflow
Install pending PS5 system and game updates, then restart the router and console in a normal sequence. Keep the console’s vents clear and do not place it in a tightly enclosed cabinet. A console that becomes unstable only after it warms up deserves a hardware and ventilation check, not a faster internet tier.
When to contact the ISP or PlayStation
Contact the ISP when several devices lose service together, the router repeatedly drops its internet connection, or the problem follows the modem on both Ethernet and WiFi. Contact PlayStation support when one console fails on multiple known-good networks, reports persistent hardware errors, or disconnects even through a stable wired connection.
