If ChatGPT voice is not working on your iPhone, first separate three problems: the conversation will not connect, ChatGPT cannot hear you, or you cannot hear its reply. Check the app’s message, microphone access and audio destination before reinstalling anything. A clear Voice Memos recording helps distinguish a phone microphone problem from an app or connection problem.
Checked October 21, 2026, using current OpenAI and Apple documentation. This guide covers the ChatGPT iPhone app; controls and availability can vary by app version and account. It does not report a reproduced bug, a speed test or a current service outage.

Match the symptom before changing settings
| What happens | Check first | What the result tells you |
|---|---|---|
| No voice or call control appears | App update, signed-in account and feature availability | A missing feature is not proof that the microphone is broken |
| The call stays connecting or fails | App message, typed chat and a second trusted network | Connection and account failures need a different response from silent audio |
| The conversation opens but cannot hear you | Microphone permission and a short local recording | A clear recording narrows the problem to the app, permission or selected input path |
| You see a reply but hear nothing | Playback volume and Bluetooth audio destination | The sound may be going to a headset or another connected device |
Write down the exact message before closing the app. A notice about access, a usage limit or an unavailable feature is useful evidence. Follow the account’s stated next step rather than assuming another reinstall, a different phone plan or a subscription upgrade will remove it.
Make sure you started a conversation, not dictation
A dictation button turns speech into message text; a live voice conversation lets you speak and receive spoken replies. OpenAI’s voice documentation distinguishes the two. A transcript appearing in the composer does not mean a voice conversation has failed to answer.
Use the voice or call control shown in your current app. For example, OpenAI’s guidance for calling your dot says to open its conversation and select the phone button. That guidance also distinguishes a call from dictation and notes that dot calling is supported in the mobile app, not mobile web. It is not a promise that every voice feature has the same access rules.
Check which product a help page describes. Instructions for desktop ChatGPT, Codex or a paired computer can involve controls absent from an ordinary iPhone conversation. Do not set up remote access or change a computer’s permissions just because a desktop troubleshooting page mentions them. This article does not apply desktop plan rules or a fixed daily minute allowance to all iPhone accounts.
If ChatGPT cannot hear you, check permission and recording
Apple’s iPhone microphone guide gives this path: Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone. If ChatGPT is listed, enable access and try again. If absent, open the app’s voice control and check for a permission request. Do not install a profile or microphone utility to force access.
Record a short, non-sensitive sentence in Voice Memos, speaking near the bottom of the phone. Stop and listen. Apple recommends this microphone check. A clear recording points you back toward the app, permission or audio route; it is not a complete test of every microphone.
If the recording is muffled too, remove any case or protector blocking an opening. Do not push tools inside. If sound stays unclear across recordings and other apps, contact Apple support or a qualified repair provider.
If replies are silent, check where audio is playing
Raise the volume while the reply is supposed to be playing. Check whether headphones, a speaker or a car audio system is still connected. Apple’s Bluetooth playback guidance explains that audio can play through the connected accessory and that the playback destination can be changed in Control Center or on the Lock Screen while audio is playing.
For a simple comparison, end the voice session, disconnect the accessory and start a fresh session using the phone itself. Then try the accessory again. If only the headset setup fails, that is a narrower problem than ChatGPT voice failing everywhere. Do this while stationary; do not troubleshoot a car connection while driving.
A headset playing music does not establish that its microphone input works in your conversation. Likewise, a microphone permission switch does not control where replies play. Keep the input test and the listening test separate so that one successful result does not hide the other failure.
If voice will not connect, compare two trusted networks
Try a short typed message in the same app. If typing also fails, record that broader connection or account problem before investigating audio. If typing works but voice fails, test the same short voice request on a second trusted connection, such as your own cellular service instead of home WiFi. Changing one variable at a time gives support a useful result; it does not prove the cause by itself.
Apple’s cellular-data guide explains how to allow or block data per app. In Settings > Cellular or Mobile Data, check ChatGPT’s switch and, on a dual-SIM iPhone, the selected data line. Cellular tests can use your allowance or incur roaming charges. Use WiFi if you do not know the cost; do not turn on international roaming just to complete this test.
If the app works at home but fails on a managed school or work connection, ask the network administrator about the failure. Do not disable security software, bypass a filter or install an unknown VPN as a fix. If it fails on both networks, the app message, timing and account context become more useful than repeated router resets.
Restart once, update, then collect evidence
Apple’s app-recovery checklist starts with closing and reopening the app, restarting the device, and checking for app or iOS updates. Try those steps in order, checking the same short voice task after each one. Avoid changing several unrelated settings together.
Do not begin with deleting the app or resetting the phone’s network settings. Apple warns that deleting an app can remove its locally stored data. Before considering a reinstall, confirm how you sign in and that anything you need has been saved. Never share a password, verification code or private conversation as part of a public bug report.
If the problem remains, note the iPhone model, iOS and app versions, exact error, approximate time and time zone, whether typed chat works, the Voice Memos result, and which network or headset changes the outcome. Send those details through the app’s official support route, with screenshots redacted. A small, repeatable description is more useful than a long list of settings changed at random.
If the separate question is which phone AI tasks can work without internet, see our Apple Intelligence offline guide. For this voice problem, stop when you have identified the failing stage and either restored it or collected enough evidence for support. Do not keep reinstalling to work around an explicit account or availability notice.
