If FaceTime works on cellular but not WiFi, do not reset the router first. The successful cellular call shows that FaceTime, your Apple Account and the other person’s contact details are at least partly working. The failure may belong to one WiFi network, the phone’s WiFi connection, a captive portal, network filtering or simply a connection that cannot hold a video call.
Start with one clean comparison
| Test result | Where to look next |
|---|---|
| FaceTime fails on WiFi but works on cellular | That WiFi connection and its network rules |
| FaceTime fails on every connection | Apple service status, FaceTime settings and account activation |
| Every app fails on the same WiFi | Phone WiFi, router or internet service |
| Other devices can FaceTime on that WiFi | The affected phone or tablet |
| Calls connect but video breaks up | Connection quality or congestion rather than activation |
Turn cellular data off briefly while testing WiFi. Otherwise, the phone may switch paths and make a failed WiFi test look successful. Turn cellular data back on when the comparison is finished.
Check whether FaceTime is down
Open Apple’s System Status page over any working connection and find FaceTime. If Apple reports a current incident, changing the router will not repair it. Wait for the service to recover and test again.
A green status does not prove your local network is healthy. It only removes a known broad outage from the top of the list.
Make sure WiFi really has internet access
With cellular data still off, open two unrelated websites in Safari. If neither loads, FaceTime is not the first problem to solve. Forgetting and rejoining the network may help one device, but first use the one-device WiFi checklist to compare the phone with other devices.
If several devices have lost internet access, check the modem, router and provider status with the WiFi or internet outage test. A visible WiFi symbol only confirms a local wireless link. It does not confirm that the router can reach the internet.
Finish the captive portal sign-in
Hotel, airport, school and guest networks often require a web sign-in or acceptance page. Open Safari and visit a normal website to trigger that page. Complete the sign-in, then close and reopen FaceTime. If the portal never appears, forget the network and join it again.
Some managed or public networks intentionally restrict calling or real-time traffic. If ordinary websites work but FaceTime does not, test another trusted WiFi network instead of trying to bypass the network owner’s controls.
Test another WiFi network
Try FaceTime on a trusted network outside the home. This is the most useful split after the cellular test. If FaceTime works there, the original WiFi network deserves attention. If it fails on every WiFi network but still works on cellular, focus on the device’s WiFi-side settings and software.
Check FaceTime settings and allowed apps
Open Settings, then Apps and FaceTime on current iOS or iPadOS versions. Confirm that FaceTime is on and that the correct phone number or email address is selected. Apple also advises checking Settings, Screen Time, Content & Privacy Restrictions, then Allowed Apps & Features if the FaceTime setting is missing.
If the device shows Waiting for Activation, treat that as an activation problem rather than a WiFi-only failure. Apple’s FaceTime troubleshooting instructions recommend turning FaceTime off and back on in the documented situations, checking the listed contact details and continuing with the device checks below.
Set date and time automatically
Go to Settings, General, Date & Time and enable Set Automatically. An incorrect clock can interfere with sign-in and secure connections. If the option is controlled by an organization or Screen Time setting, do not remove the management profile. Ask the administrator for help.
Restart the phone and reconnect to WiFi
Restart the iPhone or iPad normally. After it starts, reconnect to WiFi and repeat the same FaceTime call with cellular data off. If the WiFi password or saved profile recently changed, forget that network in WiFi settings and join it again with the current password.
Do not choose Reset Network Settings yet. That removes saved network information and other connection settings, while a normal restart and one-network rejoin are much narrower tests.
Install the current system update
Back up important data, connect to power if needed and install the current iOS or iPadOS update offered for the device. Apple includes software updates in its FaceTime checklist. Test again before changing router security or replacing equipment.
Separate connection failure from poor call quality
An Unable to Connect message is different from a call that starts and then becomes choppy, black or silent. Apple notes that a slow WiFi connection or other heavy use on the same network can produce connection alerts, broken video, a black screen or dropped calls.
- Move closer to the router for one test.
- Pause a large download or upload that you control.
- Compare a FaceTime Audio call with a video call.
- Ask the other person to test their connection too.
Do not promise a particular speed will fix every call. Stability, latency, congestion and the other caller’s connection all affect the result.
Check VPN and content-filtering tools carefully
A VPN, security app, custom DNS profile or family filter can affect one device or one network. If you installed and manage such a tool, pause it briefly for a comparison, then restore it. If FaceTime begins working, update the tool or ask its provider how to allow FaceTime without removing protection.
Do not remove a work or school profile, turn off the router firewall or weaken WiFi encryption. On a managed network, report the test result to the administrator.
Restart the router only when the evidence points there
If FaceTime works on cellular and another WiFi network but fails on your home WiFi, restart the router normally. Save work first because everyone will disconnect. Use the power procedure supplied by the router or internet provider and wait for the connection to return fully.
Do not press the factory-reset button. A factory reset erases the working network configuration and is not a sensible first repair for one app.
Know who to contact
| What you confirmed | Best next contact |
|---|---|
| FaceTime fails on cellular and every WiFi network | Apple Support or the device administrator |
| It works on cellular and other WiFi but not home WiFi | Router maker or internet provider |
| It fails only on a managed school or work network | That network’s administrator |
| Calls connect but only one contact has trouble | Compare the other person’s network and FaceTime settings |
Give support the useful comparison: the device model, software version, whether websites load with cellular data off, whether FaceTime works on another trusted WiFi network and whether the failure affects audio, video or both. That evidence is far more useful than resetting every network setting at once.
