A new router can broadcast WiFi before it has a working connection to the internet. If phones and laptops join the new network but websites do not load, check the cable, WAN status, provider connection type, and upstream modem or ONT before changing device settings.
Keep the old router and its power adapter until the new setup is fully tested. Photograph the old cables and save any provider settings you are authorized to use.
Confirm that the old service was working
If possible, reconnect the old router exactly as it was. If internet service returns, the provider line and upstream equipment are probably available, and the new router setup needs attention. If the old router is also offline, check the provider’s outage page and the modem or ONT lights before blaming the new router.

Connect the correct ports
- Connect the modem or ONT Ethernet output to the new router’s WAN or Internet port.
- Do not use a numbered LAN port unless the model guide explicitly assigns it as WAN.
- Push both cable ends in until their latches engage.
- Try a known-good Ethernet cable if there is no link light.
- Leave provider television, voice, or managed equipment connected as instructed.
A cable in the wrong port can still let devices join WiFi because the local wireless network is working. It cannot give the router an upstream internet path.
Read the new router’s internet status

TP-Link’s current support guidance also starts with the router’s internet IP address because it reveals whether the router received a usable connection from the modem. Menu names differ by brand, so use the exact model guide.
Restart the modem and router in provider-approved order
Some modems remember the previously connected router until they renegotiate. Follow the modem and provider instructions. A common sequence is to power down the router and modem, start the modem first, wait for its normal online state, then start the new router. Fiber ONTs may have battery backup or provider restrictions, so do not disconnect one without guidance.
Use the ordinary power button or unplug only the approved power adapter. Do not press the recessed Reset button. Allow each unit enough time to finish booting before deciding that the connection failed.
Confirm the provider connection type
Many services use automatic or dynamic IP configuration. Others require PPPoE credentials, a static address, a VLAN, or provider registration. Copying a random setup from another household can keep the router offline.
- Ask the provider which WAN connection type applies to the exact account.
- Use the account’s current credentials, not the WiFi password.
- Ask whether the router’s MAC address must be registered or released.
- Ask whether a provider gateway must remain in place or use a supported bridge or passthrough mode.
- Do not guess VLAN IDs or static IP information.
If the provider supplies television or phone service through the gateway, replacing it may need additional support. Keep that equipment connected until the provider confirms the supported topology.
Avoid accidental double routing
If the new router is connected behind an ISP gateway that already routes, basic browsing may work but gaming, port forwarding, remote access, or some VPNs can fail. Choose one documented design: keep the ISP gateway as the router and use the new unit in access-point mode, or use provider-supported bridge or passthrough mode and let the new router handle routing.

Test one wired device before rebuilding WiFi
Connect a laptop to a LAN port on the new router. If Ethernet works, the WAN path is active and the remaining problem is the WiFi name, password, security mode, band, or device profile. If Ethernet and WiFi both fail, stay focused on WAN setup and the upstream connection.

Update only after the setup is stable
Use the router app or official support page to check firmware for the exact model and hardware version. Keep power stable during the update. Back up a working configuration afterward. If the new router still receives no WAN address with the correct cable, connection type, and provider-approved restart, contact the provider and router maker with the status screenshot, modem model, and steps already completed.
