Internet Slow at Night? Find the Bottleneck Before You Upgrade

If your internet is slow at night but works normally earlier in the day, do not upgrade the plan yet. First compare a wired test, a nearby WiFi test, and a quiet-hour test. That short comparison usually shows whether the slowdown starts inside your home, on the WiFi link, or beyond your router at the busiest time of day.

What evening slowdowns usually mean

An evening slowdown can have several causes that feel identical from the sofa. More people in your home may be streaming, backing up photos, downloading games, or joining video calls. Nearby homes may also be using the same WiFi channels. In other cases, the connection between your home and the internet becomes less consistent during busy hours.

The time of day is a clue, not a diagnosis. A single speed test cannot tell you which part of the connection is responsible. The useful question is whether the slowdown also appears over Ethernet, close to the router, on several devices, and on more than one evening.

Run a controlled evening test

Start when the problem is actually happening. Use one laptop if possible, keep the test server or website the same, and write down the time. You are looking for a repeatable pattern, not the highest number you can produce.

1. Test close to the router

Stand or sit in the same room as the router and run a device speed test. Google explains that a router-level internet test and a device-level WiFi test answer different questions. 2. Compare Ethernet

Connect the same laptop directly to the main router or gateway with Ethernet. Turn off WiFi on the laptop so the test cannot use the wireless connection by accident. Then repeat the same test.

3. Repeat during a quiet hour

Run the same wired and nearby WiFi tests the next morning or at another time when the connection usually feels normal. Keep the device, location, and test method unchanged. A large, repeatable difference between quiet and busy hours matters more than one unusually good or bad result.

Repeat this on two or three evenings before drawing a conclusion. Wireless conditions change, household activity changes, and speed-test servers can be busy. A short log keeps you from blaming the ISP for a one-off WiFi problem, or replacing a router when the slowdown also appears over Ethernet.

Pause hidden traffic inside your home

Evening internet use is not limited to the screen you are watching. A console may download an update while idle. A computer may upload files or distribute a Windows update. Phones may sync a day of photos after they connect to power and WiFi. Cloud cameras, televisions, and tablets can all share the same connection.

  • Check the router app for devices moving a large amount of data.

Run the wired test again after pausing this traffic. If performance recovers, the connection is probably being shared more heavily than you expected. Move the router into the open

A router inside a cabinet, behind a television, on the floor, or beside large metal objects starts with a harder job. Compare 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz

Test both bands from the same location if your router exposes separate network names. A strong 5 GHz connection often works well near the router, while 2.4 GHz may remain usable through more walls. The better band is the one that stays stable where the device is actually used. Do not choose solely by the fastest single download result.

Restart only after recording the problem

A normal restart can clear a temporary router or modem issue, but do the comparison first. Otherwise, the restart removes the symptom before you learn whether it affected Ethernet, WiFi, one device, or the whole home. Do not use a factory reset as an early step. When speed looks fine but the connection still feels bad

Web pages and large downloads can tolerate short delays that a video call or game cannot. What to send your ISP

Contact the ISP after you have a repeatable wired result. Include the dates and times, the device used, whether WiFi was disabled, the quiet-hour comparison, and whether the issue affected several devices. Mention any modem or ONT warning lights and recent outages, but do not interpret an unfamiliar light as a hardware failure without checking the provider’s documentation.

  2. Record a quiet-hour wired test with the same setup.
  3. Note whether pausing household traffic changed the result.
  4. Save latency or packet-loss observations if real-time apps are affected.
  5. Ask the ISP to check the line, gateway history, local equipment, and known area problems.

Do not accept a plan upgrade as the only explanation if the current service becomes much less consistent at the same time every evening.
