How to improve my wireless speed or range?

Table of Contents

Precondition:

1. Please be sure that the hardware connection is correct and tight.

2. Make sure the firmware is the up to date.

3. If the Internet is not stable, please contact your Internet service provider to do some troubleshooting first and make sure the Internet line(DSL or cable) is good.

4. Use an Ethernet cable to connect the router to your computer. Check if the Internet is stable and carry out a test.

Symptom:

Weak wireless signal showed, low wireless speed or range.

Cause:

In most cases, this problem is caused by local environmental factors that affect the wireless signal.

If you happen to meet this problem, the following methods may help.

Solution:

1. Separate 2.4G and 5G.

Many home appliances work at 2.4GHz frequency such as refrigerators , microwave ovens and Bluetooth devices. Due to the wireless interference, sometimes 2.4G WiFi can be unstable, so it is recommended to connect to 5G WiFi to get a more stable WiFi network.

FrequencyAdvantageDisadvantage
2.4G WiFiLarger signal than 5G WiFi.1. WiFi speed performance is not as good as 5G WiFi.2. Could be More signal interference.
5G WiFi1. Perform faster WiFi speed than 2.4G WiFi.2. Less signal interference.Signal range is not as good as 2.4G WiFi.

2. Get away from obstacles.

Keep the router in the most central spot in the home and away from anything that might block its signal such as metal objects, bodies of water, reinforced concrete walls, foil-insulated walls, and other similar construction materials may severely weaken a wireless signal passing through it.

3. Optimize the Antenna’s position.

Try to adjust the orientation of the antennas for maximum performance. It is recommended placing it up high and also placing its antennas at 45 degrees (diagonally) or 0 degrees (straight out parallel to the floor), which will be more effective. Since antennas always transmit weakly at the base, do not place your wireless devices at the bottom of the router.

4. Adjust Automatic Maintenance function.

Automatic Maintenance function will help the router restart regularly. It helps improve the stability and extend product life. This function is enabled by default and you can disable it if you need the router keep working.

5. Change LAN DNS settings.

To get a faster WiFi experience, you can try to change the DNS of DCHP server.

Here we take Speedefy K7 for example. Go to System Settings > LAN Settings, enable DNS settings, and manually type in Primary DNS Server and Secondary DNS Server.

Below is a short list of commonly used public DNS servers. Secondary DNS servers can be added to add a layer of redundancy.

Third-Party DNS ServerPrimary DNS ServerSecondary DNS Server
Google8.8.8.88.8.4.4
Cloudflare1.1.1.11.0.0.1
OpenDNS208.67.222.222208.67.220.220

6. Change the WiFi channel.

Use WiFi scanner software to check if the current WiFi channel is too crowded. Change the WiFi channel to an uncrowded one according to the surrounding situation.

PS: Channels 1, 6 and 11 are generally best for the 2.4Ghz WiFi channel. Channels 36, 44 and 149 are generally best for the 5Ghz WiFi channel.

7. Test your wireless devices.

If other devices are getting continuous wireless connection, but some individual device is suffering from an intermittent wireless network, it may be that device is to blame. Please try to use the device on another network, or another location to check the performance of the device. Or just try to update the system or wireless adapter’s driver to latest one to see how it goes.
