Perplexity Free vs Pro: Prices, Limits & Features

Table of Contents

Perplexity Free is a sensible place to start for occasional questions with web sources. Pro becomes worth considering when search limits or file-upload restrictions regularly interrupt tasks you actually do. Paying buys more access and tools, not a guarantee that every answer is correct.

This comparison covers individual plans and U.S. dollar prices checked on November 4, 2026. It is based on current official pages, not a hands-on accuracy benchmark. Where Perplexity’s public pages disagree, the difference is noted rather than hidden behind an outdated feature checklist.

Perplexity Free vs Pro prices

Perplexity’s official cost FAQ lists core search as free and Pro at $20 per month or $200 per year.

OptionPublished base costPayment decision
Free$0Start here without choosing a paid trial.
Pro, monthly$20 per monthA shorter commitment for occasional paid use.
Pro, annual$200 per yearCompare the upfront amount with how long you expect to use it.

Twelve monthly payments at the current price total $240, so the annual price is $40 less before tax. But three months at $20 would cost $60, not $200. An annual discount saves money only if you would otherwise keep paying long enough.

The pricing page displays Pro as $17 per month billed annually. Do not mistake that rounded monthly presentation for a $17 month-to-month subscription. Confirm the full charge on the purchase screen.

Perplexity’s subscription terms provide for applicable taxes and renewal at the then-current rate. Treat these figures as today’s base prices, not a tax-inclusive quote or a lifetime price lock. Also compare any AI plan you already pay for, such as the options in our Google AI subscription guide, before adding another recurring bill.

What changes when you pay for Pro?

The official plan comparison distinguishes casual basic searches from searches and tools with separate limits. Its current table lists Free at three Pro Searches a day and one Research query a month. Pro’s search and upload allowances use weekly limits, while Research and some creation tools use monthly limits; the consumer table does not give one fixed number covering everything.

The Pro feature guide describes more file and photo uploads, extended Research access, model selection, image generation and limited video generation. It also says Pro Search is applied automatically within Search when appropriate, up to the plan’s limit. You may not see the same manual switch shown in an old tutorial.

For an everyday purchase comparison or a quick explanation, Free may finish the job. If you repeatedly need to analyze your own permitted documents or continue longer research after a limit stops you, Pro’s extra access is more relevant. Choose the task first; a longer list of model names is not a reason by itself to subscribe.

Do not assume every paid feature is unlimited

Perplexity’s current pricing FAQ says Free includes limited weekly access to top AI models. The help-center comparison still says Free has no advanced-model access. Those descriptions do not fully agree. Check what your own Free account offers before paying just to try a particular model, and confirm the advertised entitlement on the plan you are buying.

The Pro guide also warns that advanced-model queries can be limited during especially heavy-use weeks. Do not turn an old claim of hundreds of daily searches into a promise about today’s Research, file uploads or video generation. Note the feature that stopped, the reset period and any limit message. They are more useful than a single headline about unlimited AI.

If you are a verified student or educator, the plan comparison lists Education Pro at $10 a month with SheerID verification. Check eligibility before buying ordinary Pro. Max and Enterprise are separate products; their allowances should not be copied into an individual Pro comparison.

Check privacy and mobile-data costs separately

A consumer Pro subscription should not be treated as an Enterprise privacy agreement. The consumer privacy notice covers the website and apps, describes processing prompts and uploaded content, and includes improving its AI models among data uses. Enterprise and API products are outside that notice’s scope. Review the account’s available data controls before uploading personal documents.

Start with public material or a document you are allowed to share. Do not use an employer’s confidential file, a full bank statement or another person’s private records merely to see whether an upgrade is useful. Paying for more uploads does not settle permission to upload the contents.

The service terms also place the mobile connection and any carrier data charges on the user. Pro is not a mobile-data bundle. If you use it on your phone away from WiFi, monitor your carrier allowance separately from the app’s search limits.

Trials, cancellation and refunds are different

The Pro billing FAQ says trial and promotional redemptions require a valid payment card and renew at the selected monthly or annual standard rate unless canceled before the trial ends. A free account and a free paid-plan trial are different choices. Read the end date and renewal period before redeeming an offer.

Follow the cancellation instructions for where you bought the subscription: use Perplexity’s subscription settings for a web purchase, or the relevant App Store or Google Play subscription controls for a store purchase. Cancel before renewal. Deleting your Perplexity account does not cancel the subscription; after cancellation, paid access normally continues to the end of the billing cycle.

For U.S. buyers, the published Pro refund policy uses a 24-hour request window for monthly purchases and a 72-hour window from the original purchase date and time for annual purchases. These are not a general month-long money-back trial. Store purchases have their own request routes: Apple handles App Store refund requests, while the help page directs Google Play subscribers to Perplexity support. Check the policy promptly rather than assuming cancellation sends money back automatically.

A practical way to decide before subscribing

  1. Use Free for the ordinary questions you already have, rather than inventing tasks to justify a subscription.
  2. Record which limits actually interrupt you and how often they reset.
  3. Check a few cited sources yourself. Confirm that they support the answer and are current enough for your decision.
  4. Compare the full payment, renewal date and cancellation route with your expected period of use.

If Free meets your needs, keep it. If a specific limit repeatedly gets in the way, a month of Pro can help you judge whether the extra access solves that problem before you pay for a full year.
