Does Apple Intelligence Work Offline? iPhone Limits

Table of Contents

Apple Intelligence works partly offline, but it is not an entirely offline assistant. Some requests can run on your iPhone’s downloaded models. Requests sent to Private Cloud Compute need an internet connection, and you should not assume Siri AI, advanced photo editing or image generation will work without one. Check the particular feature and iOS version, not just whether your phone supports Apple Intelligence.

Checked October 21, 2026 against Apple’s current iOS 27 documentation. This is a documentation-based guide, not a test of every iPhone or feature. Earlier iOS versions can behave differently, and availability varies by device, language and region.

Why on-device AI does not mean everything works offline

Apple uses both local and server-based processing. Its Apple Intelligence privacy guide explains that the system checks whether a request can run on the device; more demanding requests can use Private Cloud Compute. That is Apple’s cloud service, not an offline part of the phone.

An app can also need the internet for something other than generating an answer. The model might run locally while the app still needs to download a document, fetch today’s weather or send a message. Those are separate steps. A successful offline summary of text already on your phone does not prove the app can retrieve new information offline.

Task or featureOffline expectationWhat to check
A Shortcuts action explicitly set to On-Device, using local inputThe model can handle simple requests without a networkOther actions in the shortcut may still need the internet

Siri AI and the iOS version change the answer

Apple’s current iPhone Siri activation guide says you must be connected to the internet to use Siri. Do not treat an old demonstration of an offline Siri command as a guarantee for the version and assistant now installed on your phone.

Siri AI is a separate beta rollout on iOS 27, with supported-device, language and region requirements. Apple’s setup process can include a waitlist and a download. If you are still waiting for access, switching WiFi off and on will not make you eligible sooner. Siri AI availability is also narrower than the availability of Apple Intelligence features in general.

Likewise, do not reuse an older list saying every Writing Tools or Clean Up operation is offline. The current Apple Intelligence requirements and feature list include server-side features such as Siri AI, Intelligent Photo Editing Tools and Image Playground, with daily limits. An error about a usage limit is not necessarily a broken WiFi connection. Reconnecting does not promise a fresh allowance.

Two useful options to prepare before going offline

If you already use Shortcuts, check the model selected in its Use Model action. Apple’s Shortcuts model-selection guide explicitly says On-Device can handle simple requests without a network. Cloud and Cloud Pro use Private Cloud Compute; Extension Model uses an external service. Choosing On-Device does not make unrelated actions offline: fetching a webpage or current weather still requires a connection.

For travel conversations, prepare the Translate app. In the iOS 27 Translate settings, go to Settings > Apps > Translate > Languages and download the languages you need. Under On-Device Translation, Always uses downloaded languages locally. Automatic uses local processing when languages are downloaded, but may use Apple’s servers otherwise.

Translate is a practical offline fallback, not proof that every Apple Intelligence feature works offline or that every Translate function requires Apple Intelligence. Download the required languages before losing coverage. Translating a conversation in front of you is also different from connecting a call to somebody elsewhere: local translation cannot create the missing call or messaging connection.

Check your phone before a flight or a trip without coverage

  1. Check the exact phone model and iOS version in Settings > General > About. Having a version of iOS that supports your phone does not automatically make that phone Apple Intelligence compatible.
  2. Finish any required language or model downloads while connected. Confirm that your chosen feature works online before trying it offline, and open or download the document or photo it needs.
  3. When it is safe to disconnect, turn on Airplane Mode and confirm cellular data and WiFi are off. Do this while stationary, not during a call, navigation session or situation where someone needs to reach you.
  4. Open the app directly and run a fresh request using non-sensitive sample content already on the phone. Do not count an old, cached answer as a new offline result.
  5. Record which exact operation worked, which requested a connection, and any download or availability message. Then restore the connection settings you normally use.

Airplane Mode alone is not conclusive: Apple’s travel settings guide explains that WiFi can be enabled while it is on and can remain enabled on a later use. Check the actual settings. Bluetooth can stay available for compatible accessories without making a cloud request offline.

This check tells you about the tested operation on your current setup. It does not certify all requests, future software versions or the app’s privacy practices. Keep an offline copy of essential travel information rather than depending on an assistant to retrieve it later.

If Apple Intelligence still asks for internet

What you seeCheck this first
It works online but the same fresh request fails offlineThe selected operation may require cloud processing, a download or an online app action
A language or model is still downloadingComplete the download before repeating an offline check
It stopped working after a language changeConfirm Siri and device languages match a supported option and that the new language has downloaded
The feature is absent or still waiting for accessCheck device, software, rollout, language and region eligibility before troubleshooting your router
A server usage-limit message appearsRead the feature’s limit notice; a connection change is not a guaranteed remedy

Apple’s current requirements include iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, iPhone 16 models or later, and iPhone Air, with feature-specific conditions. Available storage also matters. Treat Apple’s listed storage requirement as space on the device, not as a measurement of cellular data used by each request. Do not erase personal files or reset network settings just to investigate one cloud-dependent feature.

If you are trying to reconnect through another phone, our hotspot-connected-but-no-internet guide covers that separate connection problem. A working hotspot supplies internet; it does not convert Apple Intelligence into an offline service.

Offline, private and free are different questions

Private Cloud Compute is designed for private server processing, but it still needs connectivity. In Settings > Privacy & Security > Apple Intelligence Report, you can review a report of Private Cloud Compute requests. An empty report is not proof that every app or external service stayed offline. Keep reports private; you do not need to post one publicly to try the checks above.

Mobile-data charges, a feature’s access limits and privacy are separate matters. WiFi can avoid using your phone’s cellular allowance, but a phone hotspot uses the host’s allowance. A connected AI feature may also have its own limits. For another example of this distinction, see our Gemini Live mobile-data guide.

Before relying on Apple Intelligence without coverage, prepare the downloads and local files, then check the exact task you need. Use a confirmed local option where available, and keep a saved fallback for anything that still asks for a connection.
