Garmin Not Syncing? Check Bluetooth and Internet Separately

Table of Contents

A Garmin sync usually crosses two connections. The watch or other Garmin device sends data to a nearby phone over Bluetooth, then the Garmin Connect app uses WiFi or mobile data to update the online account. Either side can stop while the other still appears normal.

Do not remove the device from Garmin Connect at the first sign of stale data. Find whether Bluetooth, phone internet, the Garmin service or one specific activity is the actual problem.

Quick answer: place the failure on one side of the phone

What you seeFirst path to check
Device has no connected indicator in the appBluetooth, distance, power mode and pairing
Device connects but the sync does not startManual sync, phone internet and service status
Daily data updates but one activity is missingSaved activity, processing and activity-specific transfer
Sync works on mobile data but not WiFiHome network, VPN, filter or phone policy
Only one metric is missingDevice support, recording and account display

1. Confirm exactly what did not update

Open Garmin Connect and check whether the device appears connected and whether the sync animation starts. Compare the last sync time with a recent non-sensitive item recorded on the device. Garmin’s current sync troubleshooting page lists stale steps, missing workouts and old weather as common signs, but those symptoms do not all prove the same failure.

If most data is current and one field is missing, check whether that metric was recorded and supported. Garmin’s Connect app FAQ notes that a Home card may be absent when there is no data for that day or the connected device does not support the metric.

2. Keep the Garmin device close to the phone

Place the device beside the phone and make sure both have enough charge for the test. Open Garmin Connect and leave it active for a minute. A distant watch may reconnect later, but close range removes one variable while you diagnose the sync.

Do not use the watch’s direct WiFi icon as proof that Garmin Connect can see it. The app normally uses Bluetooth for automatic phone syncing even when the exact Garmin model also supports WiFi for selected features.

3. Check Bluetooth before changing the router

Confirm Bluetooth is enabled on the phone and on the Garmin device where the model provides that control. Toggle phone Bluetooth off briefly and back on, reopen Garmin Connect and try one manual sync.

If the app cannot see the device, changing DNS or restarting the home router attacks the wrong link. The device-to-phone path must work before the phone can send new data to the account.

4. Check battery and wireless power modes

Some Garmin devices can disable Bluetooth in Battery Saver, Stealth Mode or another power profile. Garmin includes power modes in its current sync checklist. Read the exact model manual before changing a setting because mode names and effects differ.

Restore the normal connection mode, then wait for Bluetooth to reconnect. Do not disable unrelated safety, tracking or privacy settings just to force a sync.

5. Verify the phone has internet access

Open two ordinary websites on the phone while it uses the current WiFi. Garmin says the phone needs an active WiFi or cellular connection for Garmin Connect to sync. If the websites also fail, follow the WiFi versus internet outage guide before changing the watch.

If the sites work, try the same manual sync briefly over mobile data, if the plan allows it. Mobile-data success with WiFi failure points toward the home network, phone VPN, content filter or managed policy. It does not show that the watch’s Bluetooth radio is broken.

6. Check Garmin Connect service status

Before clearing app data or re-pairing, check the Garmin Connect status page. If syncing or another required service is experiencing an incident, wait and preserve the current pairing. Repeated local changes cannot repair a server-side outage.

If the status page is normal and another person can sync, keep working on the device, phone and network. A status page is one clue, not proof that every individual account path is healthy.

7. Restart the device and phone separately

Restart the Garmin device using its exact model instructions, then restart the phone. Reopen Garmin Connect and try one manual sync after Bluetooth reconnects. Garmin places ordinary restarts before remove-and-add work.

A restart is different from a factory reset. The goal is to clear a stalled connection without erasing pairing, settings or locally stored information.

8. Update the app, phone and Garmin software

Check for a current Garmin Connect update and supported phone-system update. Then check the Garmin device software through the official app, Garmin Express or the method documented for that model. Keep the device charged and do not interrupt an update that is already transferring.

If direct watch WiFi is the problem rather than phone sync, check the exact model’s manual for supported networks. Direct WiFi support and compatible network settings vary by model.

9. Test whether the failure follows the phone or network

Try the same phone on one other trusted internet connection. If Garmin Connect syncs there but not on home WiFi, use the one-device WiFi checklist to inspect phone-specific VPN, filter, network profile and router controls.

If the sync fails on WiFi and mobile data while other phone apps reach the internet, return to Bluetooth, power mode, Garmin service, app state and device software. A router factory reset is unlikely to help a fault that follows the phone everywhere.

10. Remove and add the Garmin device only when necessary

Garmin’s late sync step removes the device from Garmin Connect and from the phone’s Bluetooth settings, then adds it again through Garmin Connect. Before doing that, confirm the account, record the device model and check whether any important activity remains only on the device.

Garmin notes that Connect version 5.21 and newer may also remove the phone’s Bluetooth entry when you remove the device in the app. Check whether the entry is still present before repeating that step.

Follow the current instructions for the exact phone and device. Do not pair only from the phone’s generic Bluetooth menu when Garmin Connect is supposed to manage setup. A full factory reset is a separate, more destructive action and is not the normal response to one stalled sync.

When to contact Garmin support

Contact Garmin when the device stays beside a compatible, updated phone but fails after Bluetooth, phone internet, service status, restarts and supported software checks. Provide the model, phone operating system, Garmin Connect version, last successful sync and the exact stage that fails. Do not post health readings, activity routes, location history or account credentials in a public forum.
