If your 3D printer is not connecting to WiFi, first identify the failed stage. A printer that cannot see the network has a different problem from one that rejects the password. A printer can also join the router successfully but remain invisible to the slicer or show as offline in a cloud app. Check the printer’s network status before resetting anything.
Use the instructions for the exact model. Frequency support, password rules, touchscreen menus, local control and cloud services vary widely. A fix documented for one brand may be wrong for another.
Find the stage that failed

The table narrows the search. It does not diagnose a specific model by itself. Open the printer’s network or connectivity screen and record its status, network name and IP address if shown. Do not post the WiFi password, cloud token or full diagnostic file in a public forum.
Confirm what the model supports
Some 3D printers support only 2.4 GHz WiFi. Others support both common bands, Ethernet, or no networking at all. Security modes and setup methods also differ. Check the current manual or support page for your exact model and firmware before changing the router.
Prusa, for example, says the ESP module used by several supported printers connects to 2.4 GHz rather than a 5 GHz only access point. That is a model-specific example, not proof that every 3D printer has the same limit. If your manual lists only 2.4 GHz, temporarily give that band a clear name during setup.
If the printer cannot see your network
- Move the printer close enough to the router for setup.
- Confirm that the supported WiFi band is enabled.
- Make sure the network name is being broadcast.
- Try a simple temporary network name if the model documents character restrictions.
- Keep the printer away from large metal obstructions where practical.
- Rescan from the printer after restarting only its WiFi function.
A phone seeing the network does not prove that the printer supports the same band or security mode. Conversely, a weak signal beside a metal enclosure can affect the printer even when the laptop works at the same desk. Use the signal or network status shown by the printer when available.
If the password is rejected
Forget any saved network entry on the printer, then enter the current password carefully. Check uppercase letters, similar characters and unwanted spaces. If setup uses a configuration file or QR code, regenerate it with the manufacturer’s current tool rather than editing an old copy blindly.
Do not weaken the whole home network as a first response. Verify the security modes supported by the printer. If a temporary compatibility setting is necessary for diagnosis, follow the router and printer documentation, use a separate network where possible, and restore the normal security setting after the test.
If it connects but receives no IP address
A WiFi icon may only mean that the radio is active. Look for an IP address or a status such as connected. Prusa’s PrusaLink troubleshooting guide distinguishes a missing access point from a link that has not received an IP address on named printers.
Wait a short time after setup because some printers take a while to finish joining. If no address appears, restart the printer’s network connection and check whether the router’s address assignment service is enabled. A full router factory reset is excessive and can disconnect every device in the home.
If the computer cannot find a connected printer
Compare the network name and address on both devices. A laptop on a guest network may have internet access while being blocked from reaching local devices. Some routers also isolate wireless clients. Move both devices to the normal trusted home network for the test.
Pause a VPN on the computer only long enough to test local discovery, then turn it back on. Check the slicer’s printer list, workspace and filters. Local connection works but the cloud says offline
This result points beyond the basic WiFi join. The printer can reach another device inside the home, but it may lack internet access, account registration or permission to contact the provider. A service outage can produce the same symptom.
Formlabs explains that a registered printer can appear locally while failing to update Dashboard when it cannot reach the required internet service. Test a phone hotspot carefully
A temporary hotspot can answer one useful question: can the printer join a simple supported network at all? Match the hotspot band to the printer’s documented support. Do not use this test to send sensitive designs, and avoid downloading a large update through a limited mobile plan.
If the printer joins the hotspot but not the home router, focus on the home network name, security, band, signal or isolation settings. If it joins neither, return to the printer’s setup method, firmware and hardware status. The hotspot is a diagnostic fork, not a permanent fix.
Check firmware without guessing
Read the manufacturer’s release notes and update procedure for the exact model. Some printers can receive firmware by USB or removable storage when WiFi is unavailable. Others need a particular app or desktop program. Never install a file from an unofficial mirror simply because networking is broken.

Keep network resets late
Reset only the printer’s saved network settings after you have confirmed the failure is on that device and recorded the current configuration. Use the model’s documented menu. A printer reset may also remove account binding, calibration data or other settings, depending on the product.
Resetting the home router can erase the network name, password, internet login and custom settings for every device. Reserve it for a proven router problem and make a backup first. A normal reboot is different from a factory reset.
A practical troubleshooting order
- Record the exact printer model, firmware and failed screen.
- Check the supported WiFi band and security mode.
- Confirm the network name and password.
- Look for a connected status and IP address.
- Place the printer and computer on the same trusted network.
- Check guest isolation, VPNs and slicer filters.
- Separate local access from cloud status.
- Use a compatible hotspot as a short comparison test.
- Update through the official supported method.
- Reset only the printer’s network settings if the manual calls for it.
Stop when a step changes the result. That observation tells you more than applying every fix at once. If the printer reports a hardware module error, repeats the same official error code after the documented recovery, or cannot connect by any supported method, contact the manufacturer with the model, firmware and exact status.
Do you need WiFi to keep printing?
Many printers can still accept a prepared file through SD, microSD or USB, but the available method depends on the model.
